Southwest Petroleum University is a petroleum undergraduate college founded in the face of the new China's Chaoyang. It is a co-established University between the central and local governments, mainly under the management of the Sichuan Provincial People's Government. In 2013, the school was selected as one of the 100 universities in the "Basic Capacity Building Project of Universities in the Midwest of China". In September 2017, it was selected as the first batch of "double first-class" world-class discipline construction universities in China.

In the middle and late 1950s, China's petroleum industry was quite backward, far from meeting the needs of national construction, which aroused great concern of the Party and the state. Chairman Mao Zedong visited Longchang Gas Mine in Sichuan Province. Deng Xiaoping, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee, standing member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee and general secretary of the Central Secretariat, personally chaired the Sichuan Oil and Gas Field. Exploration and development. In March 1958, three exploratory wells located in Dongguan, Wusheng, and Daying, Suining, in Nanchong, spewed high-yield oil flow, shaking the whole country. General Yu Qiuli, Minister of Petroleum Industry, took the town of Nanchong and launched the SiChuanzhong Petroleum Congress. In order to accelerate the development of petroleum and natural gas resources in Sichuan and train technical cadres for the development of petroleum and natural gas industry in the Southwest Cooperative Zone, the State decided to establish a second petroleum university, which is located in Nanchong City, a key town in the north of Sichuan where the petroleum battle headquarters is located.

In August 1958, the Ministry of Petroleum Industry enrolled 643 first-term students in Chengdu, and then appointed Comrade Ma Zai, Director of the Capital Construction Department, to lead a group of young experts and cadres to Nanchong to plan the establishment of the College. On September 20, the Ministry of Petroleum Industry, together with the Ministry of Education, formally approved the establishment of Sichuan Petroleum Institute with the consent of the State Council. Since then, with the construction and development of China's oil and gas industry, the school has begun to break the rules of running schools after students.

In July 1970, the school was renamed Southwest Petroleum Institute with the approval of the State Council. In March 2000, the school was transferred to Sichuan Province, which was co-constructed by the central and local governments and mainly managed by the Sichuan Provincial People's Government. In 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was upgraded to a university. In December 2005, it was officially renamed Southwest Petroleum University. On November 1, 2008, China National Petroleum and Gas Corporation, China Petrochemical Corporation and China National Offshore Petroleum Corporation signed an agreement with the Sichuan Provincial People's Government to jointly build Southwest Petroleum University.

The school began to recruit postgraduates in 1978 and obtained the right to confer doctoral degree in 1986. In 1988, the Oil and Gas Field Development Engineering (Joint Petroleum Machinery Engineering) became the first national key disciplines. In 1989, the State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Development Engineering approved the construction, and a post-doctoral research mobile station was established in 1991.

After 60 years of construction, the school has developed into a work-oriented, multi-disciplinary, coordinated development, outstanding advantages of oil and gas and distinctive characteristics of the university. The major disciplines of oil are in the leading level in the country.

The school has 19 teaching colleges (departments) and 1 Engineering Training center. Subject majors cover 8 disciplines, including science, engineering, management, economics, literature, law, education and art. The undergraduate course has 72 admission qualifications (67 of which are undergraduate admission majors in 2018), eight national characteristic specialty construction points, 16 Sichuan characteristic specialties, and one national cultural quality education foundation for college students. Local and 11 Sichuan undergraduate talent training bases. There are five first-level disciplines, 29 second-level disciplines, 20 first-level disciplines, 88 second-level disciplines and 12 types of master's degree (including electronic information, machinery, materials and chemical industry, resources and environment, energy power, civil engineering). There are four post-doctoral research mobile stations, one national "double first-class" construction discipline, one first-level national key discipline, three second-level national key disciplines and 15 provincial and ministerial key disciplines. There are two national teaching teams, three national experimental teaching demonstration centers, two national virtual simulation experimental teaching centers and seven provincial teaching teams. There are 78 scientific and technological innovation teams at or above the school level, of which 2 are supported by the "Yangtze River Scholars and Innovation Team Development Plan" of the Ministry of Education, 8 are supported by the "Youth Scientific and Technological Innovation Research Team Funding Scheme" of Sichuan Province, 1 is supported by the Sichuan Philosophy and Social Sciences Research Team, and 1 is supported by the "Provincial Colleges and Universities" of Sichuan Province. The Scientific Research and Innovation Team Building Program subsidizes 18 innovation teams and 49 young scientific and technological innovation teams (including cultivation) of Southwest Petroleum University. The First-Level Discipline of petroleum and natural gas engineering has gained A+, which has become one of the 80 universities with A+ discipline in China. In 2005, the post-doctoral research mobile station of petroleum and natural gas engineering was awarded "National Excellent Post-doctoral Research Mobile Station". There are 34 755 full-time students, including 29 367 ordinary undergraduates, 4 238 full-time Master students, 833 doctoral students and 310 foreign students. There are 563 part-time postgraduates and 1561 in-service postgraduates studying for master's degree.

The school has 2520 staff, 257 senior professional and technical personnel and 631 deputy senior professional and technical personnel. Southwest Petroleum University has 165 scientific research bases (platforms) at all levels. Among them, there are two national key laboratories (State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Development Engineering, State Key Laboratory of Cooperative Natural Gas Hydrate), one base for subject innovation and intellectual introduction of Local Universities under the National "111 Plan", six national engineering laboratories, research and development centers (collaboration), one national university science and Technology Park and one national technology park. There are 17 research and innovation alliances; 1 Key Laboratory of petrochemical association; 4 collaborative innovation centers of Sichuan "2011 Plan"; 1 Key Laboratory of Chongqing; 12 key research rooms of PetroChina; 3 key laboratories and research institutes of CNOOC; 2 industry and local industry alliances; and 1 key research center of Chongqing Municipality. There are 12 laboratories (research rooms), 18 research institutes (laboratories, centers and institutes) at school level, 54 research bases for horizontal cooperation, and 17 agreements for the "13th Five-Year Plan" horizontal cooperation strategy (framework).

The school has a national university science park. The Science and Technology Park is a national practice base for University Students'entrepreneurship in science and technology, a post-doctoral innovation practice base in Sichuan Province, a demonstration base for University Students' entrepreneurship in Chengdu and an incubation base for small and medium-sized enterprises in Chengdu. Relying on the advantages of science and technology resources of the school and resources of the western region, the Science and Technology Park will gradually build up the first oil and gas industry in the western region, with the development of petroleum exploration and development technology, the incubation of petroleum equipment and core petrochemical technology products as the main part, and the integration of new energy, new materials, electronic information technology and office services. There are one national quality course and 36 provincial quality courses. Since 2010, 200 textbooks have been edited and published by school teachers. The school has two campuses, Chengdu and Nanchong, with a total area of more than 3,000 mu, 356,000 sets of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment with a total value of 661 million yuan, and 20.775 million books of paper and 44.741 million books of electronic books in the library. In Emei, Sichuan, and Beibei, Chongqing, there are two special bases for field geological practice. In Nanchong, Sichuan, there are nearly 100 mu high-tech industrial bases and student practice bases. In Chengdu, there are science and technology exchange centers.

The school attaches great importance to international exchanges and cooperation, and has established close exchanges and cooperation relations with institutions of higher learning and relevant academic research institutions in more than 10 countries and regions such as the United States, Russia, Britain, Germany, Japan, France and Canada.

School graduates have good ideological quality, strong team spirit, rooted in the grass-roots level, down-to-earth, solid foundation, courage to innovate, quick start, strong stamina, outstanding performance, and are widely praised by employers. Since its establishment, the school has trained more than 170,000 graduates for the country. Among them, a large number of outstanding scientific and technological experts, professors and scholars have emerged. A large number of leading cadres of the Party and government at all levels, outstanding entrepreneurs and technical and management backbone of various fronts have emerged.
